‘Germs Are Not For Sharing’
Thursday, 20th April 2017

As the season changes, many children and even adults have snotty noses—coughing and sneezing here and there. Hence, the educators at Casa Hanoi took this as an opportunity to educate the children of the impor- tance of washing hands.

On Thursday, the 20th April, Ms Sheila read to the children a book entitled, ‘Germs Are Not For Sharing,’ The children learnt new words such as sick and germs. They also understood that germs are everywhere-good germs and bad germs. The children were appalled to find out that there are germs on the floor, door knobs, toilets, tables, toys, in the air etc.

Following what’s written in the book, the children prac- tised covering their mouth and nose when sneezing and coughing, as well as washing their hands afterwards. The book also emphasized when and how to wash our hands. After reading the book, the children and the teachers went to the balcony to practise the right way of washing hands.

Before presenting how to wash hands, Ms Sheila taught the children the parts of their hands i.e. fingers, fin- gernails, palms, and wrists. They also sang ‘I have two hands’ and counted their fingers and fingers nails. The children were very eager to wash their hands. Mia and Danny volunteered to try washing their hands as soon as Ms Sheila finished her presentation. While a few children were washing their hands, the others who were waiting for their turn sang the ’ABC’, for we learnt from the book that the right length of washing hands is as long as the ABC or twice as the Happy Birthday song.

Washing hands is one of the most important steps we can take to avoid getting sick and spreading germs to others. The children in our class learnt its importance through experien-tial and holistic learning. They were exposed to a good literature; they learnt new songs, and engaged in rote counting as well as counting with one to one correspondence.
