At the beginning, children share their ideas about how hands help them: for touching, for holding a cup, for eating easily, for clapping and so on. It appears sense of touch whenever using hands.

The children are shared and tought different textures. The things include a strip of velcro for rough, mirror for smooth, plastic wrap for crinkly, a ball of tape for sticky and drops of stick glue for the “bumpy” texture. As each children touch each piece, they are encouraged to describe there feeling if they like or dislike. They could describe with words thereby: It feels rough. It feels smooth. It feels crinkly. It feels sticky. It feels bumpy.

Children like sticky the most. They like touching it again and again.
“Teacher, I like sticky!”
“Teacher I like bumpy!”
Touch your cheeks, and say, “It feels smooth”.
Touch the floor and say, “It feels rough”.

For additional activity, the children find something rough, smooth, crinkly, sticky and bumpy, get cards with different feelings written on and then stick it the same surface.

The student finally watch a short video of blindfolded children trying to figure out which one’s their moms using their sense of touch. It’s a sweet movie of a mom and child’s especial connections. After watching the movie, we did the same activity with the help of our beautiful teachers. What a very nice activity and the children easily recognize and name their lovely teachers inspire of being blindfolded.

“He does it with his hands, by experience, first in play and then through work. The hands are the instruments of man’s intelligence.” (The Absorbent Mind – Maria Montessori)
